I remember when Apple came out with their first iPhone back in June 2007. I thought to myself, this is great! No need to lug my camera, walk-man (or iPod) and cellphone. The iPhone allowed me so much more in terms of flexibility. There was no longer a need to carry around so much gear. It made me more nibble as an artist. I no longer had to pocket my phone and grab my large, heavy camera out of my backpack. I could just swipe, point and click my iPhone.
As the years have passed a number of filmmakers and photographers have pushed the limits of the iPhone. Filmmakers like Sean Baker (Tangerine 2015), Steven Soderbergh (Unsane 2018), Steven Spielberg (used an iPhone to shoot a music video in one take), and Danny Boyles third installment (28 Years Later, Zombie Movie, was shot mostly on an iPhone 15 - 2024).
Sean Baker Shot Tangerine in 2015 on 3 iPhones, specifically an iPhone 5s with the app FiLMIC Pro. The app, FiLMIC Pro, allows a user better control over focus, aperture and color temperature. Along with other functions the app provides other useful tools.
Today several companies have created newer tools such as cinematic lens, gimbals and apps for better mobile photography and filmmaking. Black Magic has a new app that can be used on iPhones and Android phones. Cinematic lens and mobile gimbals have popped up as well. Companies, like Shiftcam, Beatsgrip, Fjorden, and Moment are just a few company that make these products at a more affordable price point than buying or renting a traditional camera and lens package.
So grab your phone and dream big!
